Credit Card Rewards on Bills Are Shrinking. Here's What Indian Households Can Do Next.
Several major Indian card issuers have revised reward structures on utility bills, rent and fuel, making bills one of the least rewarding spending categories in the country.
What changed
Issuers have capped, reduced or fully excluded reward points on utility and rent payments, and added convenience fees on rent transactions. The result is that a large, predictable share of household spending now earns close to nothing.
Why it happened
Bill payments are high-value, low-margin transactions. As interchange economics tightened, rewards on these categories became the first thing issuers trimmed.
What households can do
Track which of your cards still reward bills, avoid paying convenience fees that exceed the reward value, and look for platforms being built specifically to reward recurring bill payments.
