There is no single airline loyalty programme that is best for every traveller in India. The right programme depends on which airlines you actually fly, where you want to travel, whether you mostly fly domestically or internationally, which airline alliances are useful for your routes, whether you earn rewards mainly from flying or from partners, whether your existing bank or hotel points can transfer, and how easy it is to use the rewards for trips you actually want. The goal is not the largest number of points but the most useful route towards your next journey.

Air India Maharaja Club (Maharaja Points; Air India, Air India Express, Star Alliance and non-airline partners) for Indian travellers combining domestic and international Air India travel. IndiGo BluChip (BluChips; IndiGo-focused) for frequent IndiGo domestic and regional travellers. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (KrisFlyer miles; Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Star Alliance and partners) for Singapore, Southeast Asia and Star Alliance travellers. Emirates Skywards (Skywards Miles; Emirates, flydubai and global partners) for Dubai, Middle East, Europe and Emirates/flydubai travellers. 1. Air India Maharaja Club
Maharaja Club is one of the most relevant programmes if your travel starts in India. Members earn Maharaja Points on eligible Air India and Air India Express travel, and Air India's Star Alliance membership expands eligible earning and redemption through partner airlines. In May 2026 Air India announced Maharaja Club had crossed 100 partnerships with more than 4.2 million member transactions across partners in FY26, spanning stays, lifestyle partners, travel services and points conversion. 2. IndiGo BluChip
IndiGo BluChip can be particularly relevant to travellers whose flying is concentrated on IndiGo's large domestic network and growing international footprint. The key question is how often you actually fly IndiGo and whether the programme matches the trips you normally take. Review current earning rules, redemption rules, points expiry, eligible add-ons and programme changes.
3. Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
KrisFlyer can be particularly relevant for Indian travellers heading to Singapore, Southeast Asia, Australia and routes where Star Alliance partners are useful. Singapore Airlines maintains an India-specific KrisFlyer partner directory covering financial services, hotels, retail and lifestyle, making KrisFlyer relevant even beyond flying Singapore Airlines. Watch mileage expiry, award availability, transfer timing, partner award pricing, taxes and surcharges, and avoid transferring flexible points speculatively.
4. Emirates Skywards
Emirates Skywards can be relevant for Indian travellers who regularly travel through Dubai or use Emirates, flydubai and eligible partners, particularly for routes between India and the Middle East, Europe, Africa and North America. Emirates lists airline, bank, hotel, car-rental, retail and lifestyle partners relevant to Indian members, and states that Skywards Miles generally remain valid for three years, expiring at the end of the member's birthday month in the relevant expiry year. 5. Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Qatar Airways Privilege Club uses Avios, a currency shared across multiple participating airline programmes. Qatar Airways states members can earn Avios through Qatar Airways, oneworld airlines, eligible partner airlines and more than 100 global partners, and that earning or spending Avios can extend balance validity for another 36 months. Members can link eligible Privilege Club and British Airways Club accounts and combine Avios where programme requirements are met. 6. British Airways Club / Avios
British Airways also uses Avios, making the programme relevant even to travellers who do not frequently fly British Airways. Avios can be earned and redeemed across eligible British Airways, oneworld and participating partner activity, and the same number of Avios can produce very different value depending on route, operating airline, cabin, taxes, availability and which Avios programme is used for the booking.
Which Airline Loyalty Programme Is Best for You?
A better question than "Which programme is best?" is "Which programme best matches the travel I actually want to take?" Mostly Air India or Star Alliance travel points to Maharaja Club; mostly IndiGo domestic travel to IndiGo BluChip; frequent Singapore or Southeast Asia travel to KrisFlyer; frequent Emirates or Dubai travel to Emirates Skywards; frequent Qatar Airways or oneworld travel to Qatar Airways Privilege Club; broader Avios flexibility to Qatar Airways Privilege Club and British Airways Club; transferable bank or card points to programmes supported by your existing rewards currency; and unsure travellers should keep flexible rewards flexible.
Don't Choose a Programme Only by How Many Miles You Earn
More points do not automatically mean more value. Compare routes and airlines you actually use, how points are earned, transfer partners, non-flying earning opportunities, alliance access, typical redemption requirements, taxes and carrier charges, expiry rules, pooling and transfer options, and award availability when you normally travel. The goal is a balance you can actually use.
Star Alliance vs oneworld: Why Airline Alliances Matter
Global airline alliances connect participating carriers. Air India and Singapore Airlines are Star Alliance members; Qatar Airways and British Airways are oneworld members. Depending on programme rules, alliances can create eligible earning and redemption opportunities across participating airlines, but booking class, operating carrier, route and programme-specific rules can materially affect the outcome.
Star Alliance vs oneworld Is Not the Same as One Shared Currency
An airline alliance allows participating airlines to cooperate on eligible earning, redemption and status recognition; it does not mean every airline in the alliance shares the same points currency. Maharaja Points and KrisFlyer miles remain separate currencies within Star Alliance, while Qatar Airways and British Airways share Avios in a relationship distinct from simply both being oneworld members.
Should You Join More Than One Airline Loyalty Programme?
Yes, sometimes, but earning randomly across too many programmes can leave stranded small balances. Join widely if useful, but earn deliberately: one main domestic programme, one or two relevant international programmes, and flexible points kept outside an airline programme until a likely redemption is identified.
